Using JS Libraries
What
Integrating third-party JavaScript libraries into a TypeScript project usually requires “type definitions” so the compiler can verify your usage of the library.
How
You have three main options:
- Built-in types: Many modern libraries ship with their own types.
- DefinitelyTyped: Install community-maintained types via
@types/library-name. - Custom declarations: Write your own
.d.tsfile if no official types exist.
# Example: Installing types for a JS library
npm install --save-dev @types/lodash
Why
Without type definitions, TypeScript will treat imports from JS libraries as any. By providing types, you regain the benefits of static analysis, ensuring that you are calling library functions with the correct arguments and handling their return values safely.
Summary
Always strive to find or create type definitions for your JavaScript dependencies to maintain a fully type-safe codebase.
