Unsetting Values

What

The git config unset subcommand allows you to permanently delete a specific configuration key and its value from your settings files.

How

Specify the key name you want to remove:

# Delete a local project-specific key
git config unset webflyx.cto

# Delete a global configuration key
git config unset --global user.signingkey

Note: The standard unset subcommand will throw an error if you attempt to use it to delete an entire section name (e.g., git config unset webflyx). It is strictly used to remove specific key-value pairs.

Why

Unsetting values is useful when migrating configuration schemes, purging legacy credentials, or resetting options to their default behaviors without having to manually open and edit the configuration files on disk.

Summary

Use git config unset <key> to remove a single, specific key-value pair from your Git configurations.
