Camel Case in JS

Every programming language community develops a consensus on how code should be styled. When naming variables, the specific casing you use is a strong indicator of your familiarity with the language’s conventions.

Common Casing Styles

There are several popular casing conventions across programming:

  • snake_case: Words are lowercased and separated by underscores. Common in Python, Ruby, and Rust.
  • PascalCase: Every word starts with a capital letter. Often used for Classes in many languages.
  • SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE: All uppercase, separated by underscores. Often used for global constants.
  • camelCase: The first word is entirely lowercase, and every subsequent word begins with a capital letter.

The JavaScript Standard

In the JavaScript ecosystem, the overwhelmingly preferred convention for naming variables and functions is camelCase.

// Preferred JavaScript variable naming
let totalMessagesSent = 150;
let userAccountStatus = "active";

Adhering to camelCase ensures your code looks standard, reads consistently, and integrates seamlessly with third-party libraries and frameworks.
