Memory and Runtime
Go programs are lightweight and efficient, thanks to the Go Runtime that is bundled into every executable binary.
The Go Runtime
The runtime is a small amount of extra code that handles essential tasks:
- Garbage Collection (GC): Automatically identifies and frees up memory that is no longer being used by your program.
- Scheduling: Manages how your code runs across different CPU cores.
Memory Comparison
- Java: Uses a Virtual Machine (JVM) and typically consumes significantly more memory than Go.
- Go: Offers a smaller memory footprint while still providing the convenience of automatic memory management.
- Rust/C: Can use even less memory than Go, but require the developer to manage memory manually or through strict ownership rules.
Go hits a “sweet spot” by being nearly as fast as C/Rust while being much easier to write because of its automatic garbage collection.
